Teaching Department
The Teaching Department of the Academy of Fine Arts of the University of Zagreb is one of the oldest components of art education in Croatia. Its roots are present from the very beginnings of the Academy in 1907, when the Department for Drawing Teacher Candidates was founded, from which today's Teacher Training Department developed over more than a century. Throughout its history, the Department has educated generations of art teachers, artists, researchers and experts who have significantly contributed to the development of art education, visual culture and cultural life.
The uniqueness of the Department of Teacher Education is manifested in the connection between artistic practice, art theory, art history and contemporary pedagogical approaches. Such an interdisciplinary model of education enables students to simultaneously develop artistic, theoretical and teaching competencies and prepares them to work in the education system, cultural institutions, art organizations and the wider field of creative industries. Teaching takes place through work in studios, workshops and lecture halls, with an emphasis on individual mentoring approach, artistic research, collaborative projects and connecting with the community.
The Department has a long-term cooperation with the Department of Art History of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb, as well as with numerous schools, museums, galleries, associations and international partners. The contemporary development of the Department is directed towards strengthening artistic pedagogies, interdisciplinarity, artistic research, international cooperation and connecting art, education, technology and social action.
The Teaching Department of the Academy of Fine Arts of the University of Zagreb implements two university study programmes: the undergraduate study of Fine Arts (180 ECTS) and the graduate study of Fine Arts (120 ECTS).
