Projects

In addition to regular classes, we conduct project-based classes that include external associates and often move classes from the premises of the Academy of Fine Arts. In this way, students get to know professional working conditions, collaborate with various actors of the contemporary cultural and artistic scene and are exposed to different contexts to which they react and in which they work.

Restoration practice in the church of St. Mary at the pond and international workshop "Non-invasive and microinvasive analytical research of wall paintings"

In the church of St. Mary at the pond in Gologorica, under the leadership of prof. mr. art. Neva Pološki, the practice of OKIRU students has been traditionally held for many years. Thus, during two weeks in July 2025, 3rd year students were involved in the protection of a medieval wall painting that brings one of the oldest depictions of the Adoration of the Kings in Istria (around 1400). The conz.-rest. interventions were aimed at stabilizing the fragments that were discovered in the lower zone of the S and Z of the wall in the last three years and cleaning them up. During the research of the first wall, a fragment of a medieval wall painting was found behind the masonry canteen from 1651.  The historical decomposition of the inscribed apse unfortunately meant the irreversible loss of the painting made with special care, judging by the finding of high aesthetic and technological quality.

Students were given the opportunity to see and experience the implementation of analytical research on the building itself through a one-day workshop.  The international workshop "Non-invasive and microinvasive analytical research of wall paintings", as well as the entire practical classes, was organized with the support of the Municipality of Cerovlje and the Conservation Department of the Ministry of Culture in Pula. The workshop was led by dr. sc. Katja Kavkler (Conservation Center ZVKDS, Ljubljana) and dr. sc. Tea Zubin Ferri (ArcheoLab, Pula), starting with lectures. In the second part of the workshop, the theory was put into practice by sampling Baroque plaster from the façade, which was analyzed in the laboratory of T. Zubin Ferri, and then by conducting non-invasive analytical research under the leadership of K. Kavkler. A portable Raman spectrometer and UV light were used, and then colorimetry was demonstrated, which proved to be extremely useful for selecting the optimal color when performing aesthetic reintegration.

The workshop was organized in order to introduce students to the tools that are indispensable in researching cultural heritage materials and decay products. In order to develop awareness of the value and importance of instrumental methods through practical experience, with a primary focus on non-invasive ones.

Research and educational project Discovering Old Dubrovnik Cathedrals

Since 2018, the research and educational project Discovering Old Dubrovnik Cathedrals has been carried out in cooperation with the City Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption in Dubrovnik and the Department of Art History of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb, in partnership with the Institute of Art History in Zagreb, the Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb and the Academy of Fine Arts of the University of Zagreb. The realization of project activities is also realized with the constant support of the Diocese of Dubrovnik.

Students of the Department of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art at the Academy of Fine Arts of the University of Zagreb, under the mentorship of Prof. Suzana Damiani, are involved in the activities of professional processing of the findings of the wall paintings of the two predecessor churches of the Baroque Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Dubrovnik.
