Tošo Dabac

In cooperation with the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, an exhibition of photographs by Tošo Dabac dedicated to his travels along the Adriatic was set up at the Museum of Tourism in Opatija.

Dabac became known for his photographs that combined exceptional artistic quality and documentary value. His most famous are the cycle People from the Street (1932 – 1935), where he presents poor workers and vagabonds in an urban environment during the Great Depression, and the cycle Metropolis of Croats, dedicated to Zagreb.

Tošo Dabac received many domestic and international awards during his lifetime, but he was presented with his first monographic exhibition only in 1968, the catalogue of which we have in the library. The exhibition was held at the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the foreword was written by Zdenka Munk and Radoslav Putar. The exhibition setup, poster and catalog design were made by Ivan Picelj. Although the modest catalogue contains only 10 reproductions, it excellently presents the diversity of Dabac's oeuvre. Thus, we will find a depiction of a gentleman on a city bench in Zrinjevac, the furrowed face of an old woman, a worker without a job in a torn coat, an old wall that has been turned into an artistic relief, a view from above of sun-drenched Ilica, a scene from a glittering beach, a peasant leading a horse through the city streets... – numerous topics, spaces and social environments to which Dabac devoted himself in his work.
