Project-based teaching
In addition to regular classes, we conduct project-based classes that involve external associates and often move classes from the premises of the Academy of Fine Arts. In this way, students get to know professional working conditions, collaborate with various actors of the contemporary cultural and artistic scene and are exposed to different contexts to which they react and in which they work. We have been implementing some of these projects continuously for more than twenty years.
Laboratory-residence
Every year at the beginning of the winter semester, we move the entire teaching from the premises of the Academy of Fine Arts and occupy a different gallery space for weeks. For the last fifteen years, the lab-residency has been taking place in the space of Pogon - Zagreb's center for independent and youth culture. We organize workshops, guest appearances, lectures by various inspiring, innovative, radical and experimental cultural and artistic practitioners and theoreticians in order to bring students closer to those types of artistic practices that they do not have the opportunity to encounter in the regular program of their studies. All levels of study, both undergraduate and graduate, participate in the program.
Alumet
The backbone of the program is the collaborative artistic and research work of students of the two institutions. The program takes place in two phases each year. In the first phase, students of the Academy of Fine Arts under the mentorship of Prof. Nicole Hewitt and Prof. Ana Hušman go to London. In the second phase, LMU students under the mentorship of senior lecturer Ben Cain come to Zagreb. During their stay abroad, students participate in group seminars and presentations, visit galleries and museums, and attend lectures with the aim of designing and creating independent and collaborative artworks. Although the basic theme of the program changes from year to year, it mainly aims to artistically question topics related to "identity", "dislocation", "unknown", "tourism", "alienation", "exotic", etc. The project concludes with an exhibition in Zagreb in the gallery spaces of the Academy of Fine Arts. Over the years of its existence, this program of international cultural cooperation has profiled itself as a platform for the first encounter of students with the international art scene, and as such represents a key experience of young artists in their artistic development.
The program has been running since 2007.
Grab Cima, Hvar
The project Catch Cimu is an artistic exploration of the island of Hvar in collaboration with Ana Kovačić, head of the CIMA Art Residency on Hvar. Students will stay in the town of Hvar for a week outside the tourist season, and at the end of their stay, a public presentation is organized for the local community. Staying out of season will allow students to get to know the back of a tourist postcard, to build an alternative narrative. Over a period of a week, they react to the context they come to, explore local specifics, critically reflecting on the tourist monoculture.
Investigative Film Block
The Research Film Block is a program designed as an additional education of students in the field of photochemical film and the approach to working with film material and camera. Through the residency format, students have the opportunity to get practice on the technical and material properties of film, technical equipment and its handling, they learn through practical experience – simple and more complex methods of processing, manipulation and transformation of film material in order to incorporate knowledge and skills into their own practice and upgrade and develop the acquired knowledge in the medium of photochemical film within contemporary artistic practices. The program is conceived as a cooperation between the Department of New Media at the Academy of Fine Arts Zagreb and the Klubvizija Film Laboratory.
