Department of Graphic Arts

With the enrollment of the first generation of students in the academic year 1956/57 at the newly established Department of Graphic Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb – the first programmed study of graphics in Croatia began.

The founder of the department was Prof. Marijan Detoni, who took over the leadership of the Graphic Arts course and the so-called Graphic Specialty from Prof. Krizman. Numerous artists contributed to the development of the Department: Frano Baće (1956-1981), Zlatko Slevec (1959-1966), Albert Kinert (1961-1964), Toni Bičanić (1965-2009), Frane Paro (1967-2010), Ante Kuduz (1969-2005), Miroslav Šutej (1982-2005), Nives Kavurić-Kurtović (1983-2007) and others.

The quality of teachers-artists and innovative study programs from the very beginning to the present day make the Department of Graphic Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb a field of intriguing artistic research, and thus a place of transformation of the understanding of the graphic medium.

From akad. 2025/2026, more precisely from October 2025, the teaching of the Department of Graphic Arts is again carried out in the renovated building in Ilica 85. At that time, the introduction of a new study program of the Department of Graphic Arts began, according to which the undergraduate study lasts three years and the graduate study lasts two years.

Today, the Department employs 9 teachers in artistic and teaching titles and two professional associates for work in workshops.

The Department of Graphic Arts has six graphic workshops equipped for specific graphic techniques and procedures.

The Department of Graphic Arts strives to nurturethe graphic sensibility and develop the artistic talent of each student by creating a stimulating and challenging educational atmosphere for improving his/her conceptual capacities and enabling them to master contemporary and traditional technical skills of graphic artistic expression.
