izv. prof. art. Maja Rožman

She was born in 1981 in Zagreb. She is an artist who works in the media of drawing, installation, art book and extended graphics. Her work is based on exploring the relationship between concept, material and performance, while thematically focusing on identity, memory, rituals and perception. The process of creation is characterized by fluidity of expression and open interaction with the audience, which systematically questions the boundaries of the work of art and its experience. She studied at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow (2004, focus: graphic design) and at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest (2002, focus: visual communications), and as a scholarship holder of KulturKontakt Austria, she attended the International Summer Academy in Salzburg (2003, focus: installation). She graduated in 2006 from the Academy of Fine Arts in the class of Prof. Ante Kuduz. Upon graduation, she received the Rector's Award for independent art work and was one of the four finalists of the Radoslav Putar Award for Young Artists in Croatia, awarded by the Institute for Contemporary Art. In 2011, she won the Essl Award CEE and the VIG Special Invitation, which are awarded to young artists from Central and Eastern Europe. In 2012, she won the HDLU Award at the 6. Croatian Triennial of Printmaking, and in 2021 MTG '21 Honorary Mention at the International Triennial of Printmaking in Krakow. Since 2003, she has had 30 solo exhibitions and participated in over 100 group juried exhibitions and curatorial concepts in the country and abroad. She has also participated in more than twenty international art symposia, residential projects and professional trainings, among which the following stand out: Image De/Construction @ Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei, Leipzig, Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, SCCA, Ljubljana, KulturKontakt, Vienna, KunstenaarsLogies, Amersfoort, Cultural City Network, Graz, Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Centre, Istanbul. Since 2007, she has been a member of the Croatian Association of Artists, and from 2008 to 2012 she worked as a multimedia artist within the Croatian Association of Independent Artists (HZSU). She is a co-founder of the art collectives Projekt6 (2006 – 2011) and Kolektiv 110-502 (since 2015), in which she works as an artist and curator, developing innovative artistic practices and collective projects. Since 2012, she has been employed at the Department of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts, where, in addition to her pedagogical work, she also holds the position of Vice-Dean for International and Inter-University Cooperation.

My artistic work stems from a reflection on the world around me – social structures, phenomena and my own position within them. It is driven by an idea created through personal reflection and social context, developing in a dialogue between concepts, media and processes. Through media such as painting, drawing, printmaking, art books, installations, performances and conceptual works, I explore identity, rituals, work, perception and interaction – concepts that are constantly intertwined, changing and redefining, erasing clear boundaries. The theme determines the form, while the process remains fluid, open and subject to constant re-examination. I consciously blur the boundaries between the personal and the universal, the transient and the permanent, focusing on the moment in which meaning is shaped, refracted and reconstructed. For me, art is not a fixed product, but a continuous process that reflects the complexity and changeability of human experience.

The teaching of the subjects Drawing 1 & 2, Triving and Intaglio Printing – Advanced and Drawing in an Interactive Context focuses on technical skills, experimentation and critical thinking within artistic creation. Through analysis, synthesis and evaluation, the construction of artistic identity and adaptation to different techniques and contexts are encouraged. The interdisciplinary approach enables the free use of media with an emphasis on technical precision, innovation and independent research.
