Artistic research

The doctoral study of Fine Arts has set the basic structure of artistic research in the field of fine and visual arts in the education system in the Republic of Croatia. Artistic research involves expanding and questioning the boundaries of human cognition, it is based on imagination, not factography. PhD students-researchers can start from facts, but they can also upgrade them with imagination or completely deny them. However, they, like scientists, will use a clear methodology in their work, from the research plan, through submitting reports to the mentor and collecting material.

In agreement with the mentor, the doctoral student has the right to choose one of two models of doctoral thesis: A) doctoral thesis based on practice and B) doctoral thesis based on practice and theory. In both cases, the doctoral thesis is a synthesis of doctoral artistic research in two parts: practical work (artistic achievement) and theoretical work (dissertation) in written form. However, the difference in models is in the scope of theoretical work.

A). A practice-based doctoral thesis is selected if the doctoral student selects only a mentor in an artistic-teaching title, and consists of:

• practical work (artistic achievement) that is a complete artistic idea realized by adequate artistic means and procedures, and is publicly presented appropriate to the theme
• theoretical work (dissertation) of a smaller volume in written form of at least 30 pages of text (1 card of 1800 letters) based on art research reports, which are submitted at the end of each year of study. In a theoretical paper of a smaller volume, the doctoral student describes the methods, findings, cognitions and conclusions achieved during the artistic research on which the practical work is based.

B). A doctoral thesis based on practice and theory is selected if the mentor is I. in the artistic-teaching title, and the mentor II is in the scientific-teaching title, and consists of

• practical work (artistic achievement) that is a complete artistic idea realized by adequate artistic means and procedures, and is publicly presented appropriate to the theme
• theoretical work (dissertation) of a larger volume in written form of at least 90 pages of text (1 card of 1800 characters) based on artistic research in connection with interdisciplinary literature in the field of the topic being researched. In a large-scale theoretical work, the doctoral student uses artistic and scientific research methods, and describes the findings, findings, goals and conclusions of the research.
