Milan Trenc (Zagreb, 1962) is a multimedia artist. His picture book was the basis for the film Night at the Museum, and his illustrations from the New York Times were awarded prestigious American professional awards. After graduating from the Department of Graphics at the School of Applied Arts and Design in Zagreb, he graduated in film directing from the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb, and earned his doctorate in art at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he has been teaching at the Department of Animation and New Media since 2005. His public activity began in the early eighties when he published comics and illustrations in Polet, Studentski list, Večernji list and Danas, and since 1985 he has been the chief illustrator of Start magazine. From 1991 to 2004, he lived in New York, where he published comics in Heavy Metal Magazine, and illustrations in The New York Times, Time, The Wall Street Journal, New Yorker, Fortune Magazine, Washington Post, Business Week and other important American publications. For his illustrations in The New York Times, he received awards from Print magazine (1993) and the Society of Publication Designers (2003). Upon his return to Zagreb, he presented himself with a retrospective exhibition at the Klovićevi dvori Gallery in 2006 and a comic book exhibition at the Nova Gallery in 2007. In addition to a number of solo exhibitions (Galeria Avla, Ljubljana) and group exhibitions, in 2017 he presented the exhibition "Politics" at the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb, and in 2018 "10,001 Monkey" at the Spektr Gallery in Zagreb. In 2022, at the Lauba Gallery, he exhibited the graphic folder "Factory Mornings", inspired by the song "Maljčiki" by the group Idoli. His works are in collections in the country and abroad, and the work "Empty Suit" was exhibited at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. His feature film Fishing and Fisherman's Talk won three Golden Arenas at the 2020 Pula Film Festival, and the following year the film won the Golden Reel for Best Cinematography (Tiburon Film Festival, USA). Trenc is the author of the live-action animated television series for children Colorful Time Machine (HRT, 2013/14). For the stage, he directed and adapted the works Emil and the Detectives (ZKM, 2023) The Lost Couple (Erato Theatre, 2023) and wrote and directed the radio drama After the Agony (Croatian Radio, 2022). In 2020, VBZ published his novel Chandra in Search of Truth. During the 2021/22 season, he designed theater posters for the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb. Since 2014, he has been the author of the covers of the weekly "Obzor" of Večernji list.

My activities include film, comics, animation, theater, radio, writing and illustration.

I teach courses in the field of film directing and participate in mentoring courses in the first and second year of graduate studies.
