prof. dr. sc. Leonida Kovač

She was born on 4.7.1962 in Split. She finished elementary school, high school and secondary music school in Pula. She graduated from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb in 1986, received her master's degree in 1991 and her doctorate in 2007. From 1987 to 1993 she worked as a conservator at the Regional Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments in Zagreb. From 1993 to 2008 she was employed as a senior curator and museum advisor at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, and from 2008 to today at the Academy of Fine Arts. From 2002 to 2005, she was elected Vice-President of the International Association of Art Critics - AICA, based in Paris. She has curated and realized more than 40 exhibitions. In 2002, she was the selector and curator of the Croatian exhibition at the Biennale in São Paulo, and in 2003 the selector and curator of the Croatian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. She has held a number of invited lectures at renowned European universities, and numerous public lectures organized by Croatian and European museum and gallery institutions. Since 1992, she has been regularly exhibiting at international scientific conferences. She is a co-organizer of several international scientific conferences, including the Congress of the International Association of Art Critics (Zagreb, 2001), Postmedia and Non- Institutional Art Practices Since 1960s (Zagreb, 2014), Constructions of Memory (Zagreb, 2015), Memory, Word and Image: W.G. Sebald's Artistic Legacies (University of Amsterdam, 2019), Formats of (Non)Seeing (Split, 2022), Infrastructures of Publishing and Critiquing (Zagreb, 2023).

Her main areas of scientific interest are contemporary art, especially intermedia and interdiscursive art practices, critical theory, feminist and postcolonial theories. She led the interdisciplinary research project "History as a Theme of Contemporary Art" (2015 - 2016) and participated as a researcher in the scientific projects "Croatian Art from Classicism to Postmodernism" (2005 - 2007) and "Exposition: Themes and Aspects of Croatian Photography from the 19th Century to the Present" (2020 - 2024). She is currently leading the interdisciplinary research "Women Who Built Ships" and participates in the international project "Infrastructures of Publishing and Critiquing in a Transnational Perspective". She has published ten books and more than 100 scientific and professional papers in Croatia and abroad. She is the winner of the Annual Award of the Croatian Section of AICA (2002) and the Krunoslav Sukić Award - Book of the Year (2024) for the promotion of peacemaking, nonviolence and human rights, awarded by the Center for Peace Osijek.
