izv. prof. dr. sc. Ivana Keser Battista

She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts at the Department of Painting, in the class of Prof. Đuro Seder. From 2000 to 2012, she was active in the organization of various cultural programs as a co-founder of the non-profit association Community Art. In the winter semester of 2012/13, as an assistant professor, she teaches Visual Culture and Introduction to Media at the Media Culture Study Programme – University North in Koprivnica. Since 2009, she has been teaching the subject of Visual Arts at the Academy of Music, and since 2009 she has been teaching film courses at the Department of Comparative Studies at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, which she designed herself. As a visual and multimedia artist, she has exhibited at more than 160 exhibitions, of which 80 were international, including 40 exhibitions in renowned museums of modern and contemporary art around the world. Among others, she has exhibited at: the 1st European Biennial in Rotterdam (Manifesta I, 1996), the Austrian Triennial of Photography in Graz (1996), the Kyoto Biennale (2003), the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) in 2006 and 2012, then at the exhibition "Central and Eastern European Art since 1949" at the Museum of Modern Art in Vienna, at the Ludwig Museum in Budapest, at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin (2001), at the La Caixa Gallery in Barcelona (2000), the Leonu Museum of Contemporary Art (MUSAC, 2012), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rijeka (2019). Her artistic work has been included in numerous international and domestic anthologies, books and publications. Articles about her artistic work have been published in world art and professional magazines: Flash Art, Art Press, Kunstforum, Art in America, and renowned world dailies: Die Zeit, New York Times, Tageblatt, Kleine Zeitung, Der Standard and others.

As an artist, she deals with: essayism, collage, performance, video, drawing, photography. Her works are based on the principles of collage and essay. She is intensively engaged in the conceptualization of the medium of photography, i.e. the use of pure but also engaged photography, the creation of alternative micro-contexts, the deepening of the relations between culture and nature, the relationship between man and nature. With photographic series (concepts), she approaches thematizations and methodologies that refer to different ways of reintegration of man into nature through diary entries, recordings, to the actualization of an activist critical review of the devastation of nature. The topics she deals with are questioning values, the issue of understanding linear and quality time (chronos and kairos), leisure as a prerequisite for artistic creation, meditation, walking. She deals with the production of author's newspapers, the thematization of time, spaces of transition. As a film scholar, she deals with essayism in film, writes scientific texts covering the field of: film and history, film and philosophy, European film, French film, film and fine arts, film and corporeality... She researches methods of artistic research, which includes intermediality, interdisciplinarity, intertextuality. The methods that the artist implements include: search, archive, collection, interpretation and explanation, shaping, experimentation, intervention, creating assumptions, and through motivation, inspiration, reflection, discussion and formulation of research questions, through conception and composition, through implementation, publication and evaluation, in the manner of discourse.
