prof. dr. art. Andreja Kulunčić

Andreja Kulunčić is a visual artist who questions various aspects of social relations and social practice in her works, being interested in socially engaged topics, dealing with different audiences and collaborating on collective projects. She establishes her own interdisciplinary networks, perceiving artistic work as research, a process of collaboration and self-organization. She often requires the audience to actively collaborate and complete the work. In her works, she reflects on some of the symptoms of contemporary society, from xenophobia to depression, with a special emphasis on the burning problems of transitional and post-transition environments. Her work has been presented at important international exhibitions, including: Documenta 11 (Kassel), Manifesta 4 (Frankfurt), 8. Istanbul Biennial (Istanbul), Liverpool Biennial 04 (Liverpool) and the 10th Triennial of India (New Delhi), in group exhibitions in museums including: Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), PS1 (New York), MUAC (Mexico City), Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Kumu Art Museum (Tallinn), MSU (Zagreb), +MSUM (Ljubljana), Zacheta National Gallery (Warsaw), Garage Museum (Moscow), Lentos Kunstmuseum (Linz), Museum of Modern Art (Saint-Etienne) and Ludwig Múzeum (Budapest), in solo exhibitions, among others: Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (Mexico City), Jorge Vargas Museum (Manila, Philippines), Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Rijeka), Salon of the Museum of Contemporary Art (Belgrade), Museo MADRE (Naples), Palazzo Clabassi (Udine), Art in General (New York), Artspace Visual Art Centre (Sydney), Miroslav Kraljević Gallery (Zagreb), Nova Gallery (Zagreb) and Prozori Gallery (Zagreb). In her research, she analyzes contemporary visual, socially engaged art practice as a tactical, subversive action within the art system, with visible consequences in the real social fabric. She believes that such practice develops specific tools for encouraging social change and inspires communities to cooperate and think about a more just and emancipated world. Through her work, she explores, analyzes and interprets the ways in which artistic activity within different social situations can contribute to building a more sustainable and just society. She understands socially engaged art as a platform that opens important, often suppressed, social topics and confronts the audience with personal and collective responsibility. Transdisciplinarity is key to her approach – artistic skills are complemented by knowledge from other fields such as sociology, anthropology, psychology, design and programming. Her works are regularly created in collaboration with representatives of these professions. In her artistic practice, she focuses on the symptoms of contemporary society – from xenophobia to collective depression – with a special emphasis on the challenges of transitional and post-transitional environments. She often transforms gallery space into a space for learning and collaborative work – a kind of social laboratory whose effects are reflected outside the artistic context, in everyday life. Operating on the edges of institutional systems and critically focused on the fundamental values of imaginary institutions of globalized societies, her artistic production opens up space for reflection and questioning of existing structures, and at the same time suggests possibilities for building alternative, more inclusive models of togetherness.

Sensitizing students to specific social situations, marginalized communities and neuralgic points of contemporary society, which become a thematic and contextual foothold for artistic work. Through their own research, fieldwork, theoretical analysis and production, they develop projects in the medium of social practice. The courses encourage the development of transdisciplinary approaches and collective methods of work.
