prof. art. Alen Novoselec

He was born in Varaždin. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts at the interdisciplinary Department of Teacher Education (Academy of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in cooperation) as a professor of fine arts. He is engaged in sculpture, installation, performance, land art and related forms of creative expression. He attended the postgraduate study of conservation and restoration in Ljubljana and the postgraduate doctoral study of sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, and through his work he acquired the status of a conservator-restorer and a license from the Ministry of Culture. In her artistic work, she uses different media and materials. Employed as a red. prof. at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, Department of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art. He is the Dean of the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in the term of office 2023 to 2026. Member of the Croatian Association of Fine Artists in Zagreb, and until 2023 a member of its Board of Directors. For HDLU, he is the project manager of the Alley of Sculptures on the Sava Embankment and the Jakovlje Castle and Sculpture Park. He lives and works in Zagreb.

As my dear colleague and one of my favorite artists from our scene, Ivan Ladislav Galeta once said (in a free interpretation of the statement): Art pollutes, artists accumulate garbage and create a problem. The solution is not to create, and declared a Day without Art. Of course, the solution is not not to create, but to create responsibly. That is why since then I have been uncomfortable creating works that in the process of performance or as a final work have or can result in the generation of waste and pollution of the environment and nature, due to the use of materials that cause this. Art is certainly the smallest problem in the global pollution and imbalance that we have created in nature and the beautiful self-sustaining ecosystem. However, this is our direct responsibility and is part of the current trend that the entire biosystem subordinates to its selfish desires and needs.

In the creative field, he is engaged in sculpture, installation, performance, land art and related forms of creative expression, and through a number of projects he transfers and implements this domain of interest with students and external associates. Conservation and restoration of stone and architectural plaque as well as modern and contemporary sculpture are the focus of his pedagogical and professional activities.
