FROM THE PREFACE OF THE EXHIBITION
The exhibition "WOOL, THREAD, EMBROIDERY" presents works, collections and tapestries of students of the graduate study of Textile Design within the course Textile Creation VIII A and Ethnographic Practicum II A.
Going to the location of reGALLERY – a company for the production of "custom made" carpets and tapestries in Zabok, was an introduction to the problem task of the students of the Faculty of Textile Technology. By getting acquainted with the production process of designing, preparing yarn, dyeing wool, realization of carpets or tapestries in the technique of manual upholstery with the possibility of different textures, heights of wool and techniques for the realization of boucle and velour, students got an insight into how the final product is created.
The collection of cloth sheets of the ethnographic department of the Museum of Brod Posavlje from Slavonski Brod, collected in the villages of Brod since 1963, served as a theme for the design, elaboration and realization of our own collections of textile design. It is a unique folklore material rich in colors, motifs of ancient symbols and beliefs.
Through a personal artistic approach, the students reflected on the way in which tradition can be an inspiration for contemporary design. Through the exploration of structure, color, rhythm and composition, they reinterpreted the motifs of tarpaulins in a new context of materials and forms. Each work is the result of a process in which artistic expression, the technique of transferring an idea for collections into a tapestry, a report for print or design merge into a unique whole – a combination of handicraft and contemporary aesthetics within the field of textile art, textile design or applied art.
As part of the Ethnographic Practicum IIA course, students explored the themes of identity and migration through family and traditional memory, reading them from ethnographic artifacts – Slavonian rag sheets – and their own family photographs. The connection between tarpaulins and photographs is manifested in the observation of the processes of growing up, maturing and separating, which culminate in the act of marriage – a kind of migration to a new community. Motifs of rich symbolic meanings, which women used to embroider by hand on tarpaulins, have been transferred to these contemporary works. Here they are executed in the same technique, but on digitally printed family photographs, in intimate circular formats.

The exhibition at the Šira Gallery can be viewed during the Gallery's working hours (Mon-Fri: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., Saturdays: 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.) until 29/11/2025.
