Sibel Latin / U-turn

Solo exhibition

A WORD FROM THE AUTHOR

"In my work, I try to follow the path between history, heritage, historical spaces, culture and how we find them in everyday life and society today. In the work entitled "Into the turn", I thematize the space of the French Pavilion, its historical features, the time when it leaves its original function as a space for the exhibition of the latest technical achievements and the change of direction in function that occurs during World War II when it serves as a place for collecting prisoners. As W.G. Sebald points out in his work "Austerlitz": "our best plans turn into their opposite during their realization." The area of silenced narratives, the fabrication of facts in political and public space, oblivion, I depict in a series of paintings as a combination of constructed, illusory historical space and abstract compositions. I think in a series of images that serve as a rhizome for me and help connect the historical, present, social and intimate code.

FROM THE PREFACE OF THE EXHIBITION

We are talking about the author's intention to discover the structures and measures of the past and memory from the present moment, transience and everyday life. The possibility of occupying a space with paintings has been replaced by an exciting search for a pattern, a fragment, leaving margins, gaps in which other meanings are inscribed. Memory and contemporaneity, past and historical, are revealed in this exhibition as an indispensable driver of creative and life strategy, as what we need because of light and darkness, transient and everyday... – as the one in whose face we are looking for our own face, identity.
