INCLINATIONS OF GRAPHIC RECORDS

The exhibited graphic series is entitled Inclinations of Graphic Records, which is the title and topic of the doctoral thesis of Vanja Jović, a young Croatian artist, master of graphic arts and a representative of the graphic studio of our oldest Academy of Fine Arts, where she learned all the laws and skills of intaglio printing, and recognized the immense potential in it and shaped an authentic visual language, realizing astonishing examples of graphic opus. Like many artists before her, she realizes artistic expression through the liveliness and dynamics of lines and their mutual flow that creates amazing shapes, whereby their expressiveness is built on the inner harmony of interrelations. The liveliness of lines through forms suggests the existence of mutual flows, and through the continuity of the surface, it affirms the constancy of living. Their (melo)drama is not a finished result of feelings, but they act as if they are acting feelings. By questioning and exploring the maximum power of the line, for which neither space, shape, light, nor the atmosphere of the motif are crucial in the act of creation itself, but are (un)conscious challenges in the realization of the visual expression of the feeling of touch, the author in a way creates her own patterns in the expression of emotions and a personal vocabulary of textural patterns in intaglio printing. Thus, in the technique of aquatint, she reveals all the secrets of this process and devotedly respects its laws. She questions and explores the power of the line and the (un)conscious challenges of creating a visual expression of feelings. Using the comparative method, the doctoral student will explore the similarities and differences in observing things and tendencies towards naturalistic expressionism. It is characteristic for Vanja that she does not work on previously made sketches, but follows the path of lines created by the dry needle technique in direct contact with the metal plate, following the process of the graphic technique of intaglio printing.

Her enviable graphic skill allows her to express the dynamics of the movement of the line and the softness of matter. The author convincingly weaves her graphic ornament with aquatint, mezzotint, etching and dry point, like a labyrinth into which we enter by walking through the endless spaces of the finest silk threads that lead us to the calm of a luxurious forest through whose crowns light breaks through. In the interweaving of imagination and reality, line and surface, Vanja celebrates Life, in the forest, under the crown of the tree she reached. Along with the inclination towards the infinite, freedom of expression is at the forefront of which is intuition. The author intuitively feels the power of her action. That is why values recognized only by evoked emotions have no place in any scientific framework, but outside of it. Because of such values, rules and principles change if they are presented to an institution that still cannot survive without the constant idea of finding truth, beauty and a measure of uniqueness.

BIOGRAPHY

Vanja Jović was born on 07.02.1984 in Makarska. She is currently completing postgraduate doctoral studies in graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Zagreb. She graduated from the High School of Applied Arts and Design, Department of Graphic Arts, in Zagreb. She graduated in Applied Graphics in 2009 from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. She is a member of the Croatian Association of Fine Artists (HDLU) and the Croatian Society of Designers (HDD).
