Communication, communication, negotiation, exchange or transmission of thoughts – something is lost during these operations, something has remained hidden in the transmission of thoughts. Unnoticed part marked with DIS – it is a kind of impossibility, interruption or misunderstanding within communication. Communication is perhaps a more accurate term: it means nothing else than an agreement/agreement within communication, where the parties involved adapt to some extent and reshape their thoughts into a common denominator. The agreement pretends that DIS does not exist, that is, it tries to suppress it in every way. It is only necessary to think about how many factors must be harmonized in order for communication to flow 'normally', that is, that there are no tense moments, misunderstandings, unnoticed desires and silence. We understand something – we communicate – precisely because all communication takes place in a certain space and at a certain time, and if we minimally turn the established flow of communication, the transmission of thoughts becomes unusual, strange and illogical.

The exhibition under the common title of DIS-communication questions the stability and automatism of everyday moments of communication and tries to evoke in various ways exactly that forgotten DIS that, even if on a subconscious level, is always present among us. The established way of communicating, in other words 'normal' communication, has become predictable and we often do not notice or omit all the DIS-functional moments on which the norm is based. Without DIS, we actually skip all the interesting moments and fall into apathetic automatism.

In a specific way (sometimes humorous), artists extract certain fragments of the whole from everyday communication, exhibit and transform them, and in this way they gain visibility. Through concealment, disclosure and duplication, the works try to transform some moments from everyday life. Thus, in the work Repetitions, Tomo Stanič tries to revive the memory of the forgotten past by repeating postcards-copies – whereby the forgotten becomes present again. The effect is the opposite – the visible must remain invisible in order to preserve it as a memory. In the works of Neža Knez, the main role is played by communication "here and now", whether it is an unusual action in the middle of a meadow or "meaningless" translations of street graffiti from visual to tactile form. All works are permeated by the problem of communication, or rather its impossibility, of DIS-communication that the artists in question re-establish and explore in different ways.

Neža Knez

She graduated in 2014 from the Department of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, where she is currently a master's student under the mentorship of Professor Jože Barši. She has received the following awards: Recognition for Outstanding Academic Achievement, Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement of the Academy of Fine Arts of the University of Ljubljana, Award for Innovative Approach to Visual Arts, Prešeren Award of the Academy of Fine Arts, and she was also nominated for the esteemed award of the OHO group. Her artistic practice has been presented in Slovenia and abroad through solo and group exhibitions and art residencies.

Tomo Stanič

He graduated in 2010 from the Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana. In 2016, he received his master's degree from the Department of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in 2014. He is currently enrolled in the doctoral study of Theoretical Psychoanalysis at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Ljubljana under the mentorship of Prof. Mladen Dolar. He is the author of the book "Architectural Spectator", published by Studia Humanitatis. He is a member of the editorial board of the journal Voids and the publishing house Other Spaces. His works and essays have been published in the journal for the theory of contemporary art Šum, the journal Voids and the journal for theoretical psychoanalysis Problems. He is the recipient of the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award from the Academy of Fine Arts of the University of Ljubljana and was nominated for the prestigious OHO Group. His artistic practice has been presented in Slovenia and abroad through solo and group exhibitions.
