Discovering the Old Cathedrals of Dubovac / Educational-Research Project OKIRU ALU

Group exhibition

FROM THE PREFACE OF THE EXHIBITION

The activities of professional and scientific processing of all movable monuments and archaeological finds originating from the site of the Baroque Cathedral of Our Lady of the Great and the neighboring Bunićeva poljana in Dubrovnik began in 2018, as part of the project Discovering Old Dubrovnik Cathedrals. The project continued the activities started in 2015, focused primarily on the processing of stone fragments of the site.

Since 2018, the project has been implemented in cooperation with the City Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption in Dubrovnik and the Department of Art History of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb, in partnership with the Institute of Art History in Zagreb, the Institute of Archaeology in Zagreb and the Academy of Fine Arts of the University of Zagreb. The realization of project activities is also realized with the constant support of the Diocese of Dubrovnik.

Students of the Department of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art at the Academy of Fine Arts of the University of Zagreb, under the mentorship of Prof. Suzana Damiani, are involved in the activities of professional processing of the findings of the wall paintings of the two predecessor churches of the Baroque Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Dubrovnik – the Byzantine Basilica and the Romanesque Cathedral. The main activity is focused on documenting and proper disposal of thousands of painted fragments, and the research also includes wall paintings preserved in situ. Cooperation has been established with several scientists and institutes in Croatia and abroad for the purpose of scientific analyses, and valuable new results have been obtained not only on the dating of individual finds, but also on techniques, materials and artistic procedures from different historical periods.
